Big Trouble In Little China

A classic. This is one of John Carpenter’s best action films, and it mixes it in with comedy with some pretty damn good results. Jack Burton is a loser truck driver who wins some money while in Chinatown, in San Francisco. He agrees to accompany his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) to pick up his bride at the airport. There, Jack meets the girl of his dreams, Gracie Law. It’s too bad for Wang, whose Bride is kidnapped by a gang of Chinese gangsters. Soon Gracie gets kidnapped too, and both Wang and Jack, with the help of a good street gang and sorcerer Egg Shen (Victor Wong) go into an underworld building of Chinatown to battle evil sorcerer Lo Pan (James Hong) and his hordes of supernatural warriors and monsters. My favorite thing about this movie is the fact that Jack Burton is the biggest loser you could find. He never wins in the battles, he always makes the situation worse and ends up alone. It’s Wang who’s the real hero, kicking ass and doing some very impressive Chinese swordplay battles. It’s like a comic book, you got really good good guys, a supernatural villain and over-the-top henchmen. I’m talking of course, of the three warriors, the one who inflates when angry, the flying swordsman and the guy who shoots lightning, who probably inspired the Mortal Kombat character Raiden. This is a genius film and a must see for fans of action and comedy, with a bit of martial arts and Chinese mysticism involved.
