Boxcar Bertha

Based on Depression-era drifter Bertha Thompson, this film is mostly famous for being the first big film by director Martin Scorcese and actress Barbara Hershey. Bertha is a young girl with a lot of experience who gets involved with a group of criminals in the ol’ racist south. What does she do? She lets them out of jail and rob trains. The movie however, is a so-so treatment of the crime genre that existed for a while after Bonnie & Clyde came out, although this is definitely not as good as that particular classic. It is however, interesting considering it’s great cast. David Carradine, Barry Primus and David Casey all show up as the robbers, and David’s daddy John puts on a role as the wealthy bastard who wants them dead. Definitely an interesting film, but not impressive when looking at Scorcese’s filmography.
