Subway Riders

Wow, it has been a long time since I’ve felt so divided about a movie. Amos Poe is one of my favorite filmmakers, with movies like Blank Generation, The Passenger and Unmade Beds. So when I saw this, I was expecting to be as enthralled as ever, but alas I wasn’t. Still, there’s a lot to recommend. The story deals with a detective played by Robbie Coltraine (yes, from Harry Potter and From Hell) who’s searching for a psychotic saxophone player played by Jarmusch regular John Lurie. Involved in it all is a prostitute played by a very attractive Cookie Mueller and the detective’s drug-addicted girlfriend played by Susan Tyrell. Basically the scenes dealing with Lurie are very good, they’re better lit and are more interesting. Same thing with the scenes involving Cookie Mueller, who looks very attractive and commands her scenes with an obnoxious charm. She’s come a long way since Pink Flamingos! Still, the movie’s pace is terrible and should have been edited a little better. Only for fans of the NY cinema underground.
