Office Space

The perfect comedy. Yes, this is the kind of movie that I can see every time when I feel down and depressed and it will always cheer me up. Anybody who has ever held a shitty job, hated their boss and wanted to fuck up the company they worked for can relate to this film. It was directed by Mike Judge, the man who created Beavis & Butthead, and based on his Milton shorts on SNL. It’s the kind of movie that defines what cult classic comedies are all about, and is right up there with others like Monty Python And The Holy Grail and Caddyshack.
The movie deals with Pete Gibbons (Ron Livingston), a man who, as you can tell, really hates his job. After a session with a hypnotist goes awry, Pete is brainwashed into a state of total bliss, a state where he really doesn’t give a shit about anything or his job, and it all seems to get better for him. Hell, it even gets him to sleep with Jennifer Aniston. And in part this greatness bites him in the ass, as he’s forced to fire his two best friends. But his friends have a backup hacker plan to rip off their company, and it’s this plan that will be Pete’s downfall. Will he make it? Of course he does, you’ve seen this film. All of it to the tune of hardcore gangsta rap.
The cast is the best part of the film, making up small but memorable characters. Probably the most memorable is Gary Cole as Bill Lundberg. He’s soft spoken but obnoxious, literally the boss from hell, the guy that will come to make you work on the weekend. He’s a memorable ‘villain’ and has many of the funniest scenes. There’s also the constantly stressed-out Tom Smykowski, played by Richard Riehle. His performance is constantly stressed and looks like he’s about to have a heart attack every second. His best scene is his breakdown in front of the consultants. But of course, it’s Stephen Root as Milton who steals the show, as the bumbling, and somewhat psychopathic worker who keeps being moved and threatens to set the building on fire. Just for this cast alone you should see it. Hell you should see it anyway, it’s one of the greatest movies ever made.
